Alibaba, a Chinese technology giant, has announced that it’s launching its own artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot called Tongyi Qianwen. This chatbot will be integrated into Alibaba’s various businesses soon, although no specific timeline has been given. The chatbot can work in both English and Chinese and will be initially added to Alibaba’s workplace messaging app, DingTalk, where it will be able to take notes during meetings, write emails, and draft business proposals.

This launch follows the release of ChatGPT by Microsoft-backed OpenAI last year, which has sparked a lot of interest in generative AI. Generative AI uses data to create content that’s indistinguishable from human work. ChatGPT can answer questions using natural, human-like language and can also mimic other writing styles. Microsoft has invested billions of dollars into this technology and has even added it to its search engine Bing.

However, there are concerns about the potential risks associated with powerful AI systems. A recent report by investment bank Goldman Sachs estimated that AI could replace the equivalent of 300 million full-time jobs. Last month, a group of high-profile figures in the tech industry called for the training of powerful AI systems to be suspended due to fears of a threat to humanity. Additionally, Italy recently became the first Western nation to block ChatGPT, citing privacy concerns.
